MVE Winter Pageant

posted Dec 15, 2017, 11:17 AM by Heather Peters   [ updated Dec 15, 2017, 11:17 AM ]

I Need a Little Christmas Vacation

It’s the last day of school before winter vacation officially starts.  Excitement fills the air with plans of tropical vacations, shopping at the mall, visits from relatives, NO homework, favorite holiday meals, and lots of presents!  Everything is just right, including the beginning of a beautiful snowfall.  SNOW!!!  Oh no!  The snow keeps coming and vacation appears to be heading for disaster.  Everyone may have to spend the holidays at school!  Dinner cooked in the Science Lab?  Shopping on the web?  What will the students do?

This year’s Winter Pageant will begin at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, December 20th in the Mill Village Elementary gymnasium.  Please come and support our hard working students.  All students are to wear their “Holiday Best” and should arrive at the school no later than 6:00 PM.  If your student is unable to attend, please send in a note so we can plan the Pageant accordingly.  Hope to see you there!

2nd Grade Visits PSU-Behrend

posted Dec 15, 2017, 11:16 AM by Heather Peters   [ updated Dec 15, 2017, 11:16 AM ]

The Mill Village second graders had their first field trip on November 8th to the Yahn Planetarium at Penn State Behrend. The students were able to sit back and watch a video in the sky that took them in a rocket ship to each of the planets! Students got to look at the stars and learn about different constellations. Afterwards, the students also got to visit different stations with facts about each planet. A favorite station of the students was stepping on a scale and seeing how much they would weigh on each planet. A student who weighs 57 pounds on Earth would only weigh about 9 pounds on the moon!

4th & 5th Grade - OC&T Railroad Trip

posted Dec 15, 2017, 11:14 AM by Heather Peters   [ updated Dec 15, 2017, 11:15 AM ]

On Friday October 15th, the 4th and 5th grade classes took a historic ride on the OC&T railroad in Titusville, PA. Before boarding the train, students reviewed a collection of memorabilia and took turns weighing themselves on the 100 year old scale. Once on the train, the students selected seats and anxiously waited to hear the whistle, signaling our departure! During our ride we enjoyed the fall foliage as we passed through the valley and Drake’s Well. Students had the opportunity to buy and send a postcard through the antique mailbox. All students had the chance to experience the train ride on the open car. After our 3 hour tour, we visited the gift shop for students to purchase a memento or explore the timeline of the OC&T railroad!

Mill Village Elementary Literacy Night

posted Dec 15, 2017, 11:13 AM by Heather Peters   [ updated Dec 15, 2017, 11:13 AM ]

A wonderful program centered around picture books that enhances visual learning will be offered on October 19th in the Mill Village library.  Children are guided through the picture books by questioning and paraphrasing to find their unique understanding of the story.  Picture books allow the reader to make her/his own meaning, there are no correct or wrong answers.  Writing and/or drawing projects can be extensions of these visual learning thinking strategies.

Kitty Harrington and Ann Joslin will be the presenters for this program.  Kitty was a children’s librarian at the Erie County Public Library and continues to present literacy programs throughout Erie County.  Ann was a manager at the Erie County Library, an elementary school teacher and an adjunct instructor at Gannon and Clarion University.

3rd Grade Waterford Fair Trip

posted Dec 15, 2017, 11:10 AM by Heather Peters   [ updated Dec 15, 2017, 11:10 AM ]

The Mill Village 3rd graders have had a wonderful start to the school year. On September 6th they had the privilege of visiting the Waterford Fair for their first field trip. A guide from the Kiwanis club gave them a tour of the fair discussing the many animals as well as the produce and crafts in the home show buildings. A favorite exhibit of the students was a pumpkin that weighed over 200 pounds. The students had many interesting questions that were answered throughout their tour. The Mill Village 3rd graders were even lucky enough to milk a goat! After the tour, the students returned to school and practiced their writing skills by completing an essay about their day at the fair. The lucky winner of the essay contest will be honored by the Kiwanis Club and win a prize!
